At the YMCA
August 6, 2008 11:13 am SCI RecoveryIt has been some time since I posted an update, but I waned to wait until I had something interesting to share. I have had a good summer, with some travel to Toronto and Niagara-On-The-Lake. I also celebrated my 6oth birthday with a number of friends.
I have also started working out at the downtown YMCA. I go to the gym twice a week, each time for an hour and a half. I also have been joining Suzanne for aquafit once a week. Helen Neves, from the YMCA, has prepared a wonderful exercise program for me there, and together we are working on improving all my muscles, as well as getting me to walk with fewer and fewer aids.
Yesterday Suzanne took a whole bunch of little videos, which I am sharing with the world. There are 22 of them, but most of them are less than a minute long.
First I stand up and walk a little without using any technical aids — no walker, and no canes.
Next I start walking down a long ramp, not holding on as much as possible.
Now I go back up, without holding on.
Now I walk down the ramp, as quickly as possible, using the bars to maintain my balance. I am always trying to maintain a good heel-and-toe movement. This is something which I am trying to teach my brain to do.
Now I go back up, again as quickly as I can.
Now we try walking backwards. This is really difficult, since I have to use muscles I rarely use. First we go downhill,
and then we go uphill.
Now we take a short walk to the gym. This is what they call a Techno-Gym.
Once I have checked in, I am ready to get on the treadmill. We start slowly, and eventually build up to a faster pace.
Here we go…
I like to fool around a lilttle while walking; it helps the time pass. All in all, I do about 12 minutes on the treadmill.
Walking along.
Now we pick up the pace a bit.
After all that walking (about 20 minutes in the hallway and on the treadmill) it is time to work some other muscles, in my upper body and my core. There are a number of machines I use to work on specific muscles.
I can now walk from one machine to the next.
Working on the upper body.
More exercises.
On to the next exercise.
I also do some execises standing up. This helps with both my strength and my balance.
We are also working on strengthening specific muscles in my legs by doing step exercises…
and more step exercises.
Near the end I also work on my back as well.
I generally finish this off with some balance exercises and some stretches.

Hey Julian ! Hey Suzanne !
It is seldom that we see such amazing determination and iron-willed focus documented so clearly.
This blog and these images are amazing for me . . .it prompts me to say a prayer for your continued energy to triumph over this amazing hurdle that you have been handed.
As for the videographer . . . please, NO VODKA before doing any more filming! Also, stop giving ANY vodka to Julian! He would do much better on that ramp thing!
Love and hugs and prayers from Bob and Barb and all the Harrises in New Jersey, USA

Great stuff Julian!
As your quote mentions on the ‘front-page’ of /progress, your videos are similar to what we see Isaac doing every day.
In relative terms however, it’s unfortunate you don’t have a 15′ tall trainer waiting to catch you.
The greatest similarity though is the grin on your faces. Perhaps its the low-res video, but I swear Isaac gives us the same gleeful smiles as he is walking/waddling.

Dear Julian,
Thank you for keeping us posted on your journey. You abilities have improved so much since we saw you last December!
As a watched the videos I thought of the attribute of constancy. The spinal cord injury is with you constantly, but so is your strength to overcome it and the support of your family and friends.
You’re looking good!
All the best!
Heather

Well, the next thing you will be telling me is that you are training for the Olympics and that wouldn’t surprise me a bit, since what you have accomplished to date, outshines any short lived exercise. Striving for perfection one step at a time. The journey of a 1000 miles. Adding water, lightens the weight and you’ll go even farther. Look at the whale. In water, it glides at high speed.
I think chocolate lifts the spirit too. So thank God for chocolate, the darkest kind is best. You’re going to need it after all that exercise. So okay to indulge a bit. You deserve it. Make sure you reward yourself!
Hugs,
maria

Many many years ago, Winnifred Harvey, upon her be peace, gave a class in which she imagined an archeology class held in 610 of the Bahai Era, in which an artifact had been discovered which said Things Go Better With Coke and the students wondered what kind of spiritual wisdom the ancient Bahais had that was summed up in the word Coke. In the same way, as you do your treadmill and your walking, try to compare it to the spiritual: after all on this plain of existence we have a choice to make progress or not and if we do we progress much faster than on the next plain of existence in which we have no choice whatsoever. Just a little spiritual thought for this afternoon.

Wooowwwww!
Bravo!
Affectueusement,
Marie-Claude
